Challenges of Power Grid Icing in Cold Regions

Recently, Pearl Electric has successfully delivered the first 17,400 kVA/35 kV dry-type transformer customized for the ice-melting system of State Grid Yulin. This handover marks a key project milestone, achieved through in-depth technical cooperation between Pearl Electric and China XD Electric Co., Ltd.

In winter, low temperatures and snow freezing often cause ice accumulation on overhead transmission lines, which may break cables or collapse transmission towers, leading to large-scale power outages and serious threats to grid security. The de-icing transformer provides targeted power supply for line ice melting, removing ice coating efficiently and protecting the safe operation of the power grid.

Advantages of Dry-Type Transformer for De-Icing Application

Dry-type transformers stand out for de-icing scenarios compared with oil-immersed transformers. Without insulating oil, they avoid risks such as oil solidification and leakage under ultra-low temperatures. They feature strong environmental adaptability, high operational safety, low maintenance workload, and stable output performance. These advantages make dry-type products the preferred solution for outdoor critical grid anti-icing projects.

This 17400 kVA dry-type unit is the first de-icing transformer deployed for power grid ice melting in the Ankang and Yulin regions. Local power networks bear heavy winter anti-freezing pressure every year. After being put into service, this equipment will offer stable and efficient ice-melting support for regional transmission lines. It can rapidly eliminate ice accretion on power lines during snow disasters, guarantee continuous and stable power delivery for residents and industrial users, and consolidate the power guarantee for local economic and social development.

Strict R&D and Quality Testing for Extreme Cold

The whole manufacturing process passed strict design verification, raw material inspection, winding processing, casting curing, and full-type testing. Our R&D team optimized the insulation structure and heat dissipation design repeatedly to ensure the transformer can maintain stable performance under alternating cold and load changes. Strict quality control was implemented in every production procedure to meet State Grid’s high standards for power equipment used in harsh climates.

The completion of this delivery demonstrates Pearl Electric’s strong capability in custom developing high-capacity dry-type transformers for special grid scenarios.
